03.13.2012

My grandmother is quite interesting.  She is great, really, a lovely person.  Although, she is quite interesting.  I have noticed over the course of my life that she cares a lot about herself, and, only herself.  She loves her family, loves her friends, but she wants everyone and everything connected to her.  Totally cool.  I get it.  That is how we should all generally live our lives—for ourselves.  But, for some odd reason, selfishness is not an attractive trait therefore most people try to avoid this personality flaw.  I still believe it is part of temperament…something one cannot change.  Anyway, Tete is special.

Today is one of my grandmother’s two birthdays.  Literally.  My grandmother has two birthdays.  Officially, she was born today 80 years ago.  However, and this can only happen in Argentina (or any other “third” world country), since her father did not like the day 13, he legally changed her birthday to the 17th.

I do not believe that this can legally occur—what about all those leap year kids that were born on the 29th of February…don’t you think a parent would want to legally change the date to the 28th of February or the 1st of March?  Would be awesome, but, illegal in the United States.  One’s date of birth is that person’s date of birth.  One can celebrate it another day, but the date of birth stays the same.

So, today we are celebrating one of Tete’s two birthdays…the real birthday and the legal birthday.  The funny part is that every year we go through the same thing—“We will only celebrate ONE of the days.”  However, if we do not celebrate the other one, Tete gets offended.  So, every year for the past 80 years, we have celebrated my grandmother’s birthday, twice.  Happy Birthday Tete!

K bye.
