This week has been spectacular. Although, I do have this huge emptiness inside me being so far away from home—in the literal and the figurative sense—on my birthday. This week I felt the most homesick ever, yet, I realized that the people here really do care about me. That was something I really needed to feel.
Essentially, birthdays here are not celebrated on just one day. It is a weeks-long celebration. Not only because each person here has a ton of friends and must celebrate it with each group of people, but because they love to celebrate life here!
There is always one day you celebrate with family—for me, that was Friday eating a very fancy and very delicious Arabic meal (hummus was included). The rest is in between family and friends. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and today I have gotten together with friends and family. Not always was it a celebration for my birthday since this week has been monumental--a couple of close friends had to pass exams to begin their classes within a week and we had a couple of other birthdays to “festejar.” However, people still mentioned and still attempted to give me hugs in celebration. They knew I needed it.
Most events include food—pizza, asado, salad, ice cream, cake—and most of the time you do cheers with beer or wine, however, being surrounded by athletes, it was more like Coke and water. ( I am actually pretty content not drinking…I have never been someone to drink a lot of alcohol as you all know [“Grandma Gabi”]. However, I have been drinking even less since I’ve been here and I feel great! Weird, huh? Especially with all the good wine they have ) But, a few did rreeaalllllyy enjoy the traditional sangria I made for Wednesday’s asado. Even my grandma enjoys it! That’s a feat.
Tuesday evening will be the first time that my friends come over to my grandmother’s apartment. Obviously, I cannot invite everyone, but the select few that come will be enough. My grandmother is SO excited. She has wanted to have my friends over for a long time and this is finally our chance! Plus, I am excited to make some empanadas. Tomato jam down, empanadas next!
K bye.
