I was sitting at my usual table at my usual café drinking my usual café mediano before work this afternoon and to my left I see two slightly larger young women…speaking in American English. I was reading a book, Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegaut on my BlackBerry, so I was pretty focused on reading rather than their conversation, although I could not help but notice that they were, well, very American. Drinking champagne at 2:26 in the afternoon and just venting about each other’s lives.
Honestly, venting is an international action. People all over the world vent. I believe it is necessary in order to have a healthy mind. Some vent wwaayy more than others. Some do not vent enough, and when they do vent, it is somewhat explosive. However, something about American venting, in which I am TOTALLY at fault, is that sometimes it seems that we are competing to see who has the “worst” to vent about. Instead, one should just let our thoughts out…which is venting, in fact, is.
Conversations with Argentine friends and family, I have found that venting consists of one person speaking and another person giving advice, if possible, or venting with the person “que tarado!” “What an idiot!” It never seems like a competition. Venting actually results in what it should…a release of thoughts, bad energy, and freeing an open mind.
K bye.
