“Caballerismo” is a term that my aunt described for the men in Argentina. I do not think the term actually exists in the Spanish language, but I believe the interpretation transpires. (I apologize in advance to you guys…do not be offended, this is just how it is down here.) All men fit under the criterion that they are all gentlemen. Seriously, like old school gentlemen. They all want you to be happy. Never allow you to even think about money. If you are indecisive, even better as they love to assess places to go and fun things to do. They approach you. They invite you. And, if you don’t end up liking them (if that’s what they’re looking for), it is okay because they were able to have someone pretty for an evening. They had something to show off. All guys will make sure you have a ride back, no matter who you are or even if you talk to the guy. They are protectors here and want you to be safe. It is such an odd concept when an entire nation of men is like this.
Friends, family (although they torment you more), boyfriends (they will give you more hugs and kisses): all gentlemen. Granted, there are some downfalls to this. Money-wise, men earn more…significantly, still. There are very few women that hold the highest positions in companies and organizations. It is safer for men to roam around as well. Women are usually never allowed out on their own at certain times of the day. Also, if you are a very independent woman, like to make decisions, like to be the person in the relationship that plans everything, figures everything out, drives, etc. you are bound to have issues concerning this concept. It is not that men here feel an obligation to be guardians or noble. Men here actually enjoy “caballerismo” and take pride in the notion. They enjoy being this way because it indicates some sort of power that they have…gives them a little incentive to be decisive, outgoing, and assertive. Plus, this way, they actually work hard to get what they want out of life. The lazy ones are the guys that are unhappy. It kind of makes sense this way, too.
k bye.
