07.07.2011

I work at a pretty prominent hotel here in Mendoza.  At this moment, we have the sports department of the national television channel of Chile as our guests for the Copa America 2011.  Honestly, they have been here for about 10 days and all I have felt is that Chileans are very demanding and “pesados.” (“Heavy,” in a bad sense.)  I have not felt the feeling I was assuming I would sense a huge futbol event would bring.  Particularly a huge futbol event in a country in which the government spends millions more on making sure futbol is available on all television sets than on the school system.  I have been slightly disappointed by the apathy.

However, today I am sitting at my reception desk and I look out the door to find a bunch of Mexican fans, in sombreros and colorful ponchos, on the corner yelling “OLE OLE OLE OLE MEXICOOOO MEXICOOOOO.”  The Mexican futbol team is staying at the Sheraton right next door to our hotel (the Sheraton and our Huentala Hotel are run by the same owner) and these fans have apparently been standing all day outside on that very corner waiting for this very moment when the Mexican team finally arrives. At last, the Copa America 2011 has arrived!

K bye.
