08.12.2011

In the US, cars such as Eclipses, Pontiacs, Ford Taurus’s, etc. are ordinary sightings.  No one looks at a Toyota sedan, Corrolla for example, and says “SHAZAAM! That is a nniiccee car. That person must be loaded.”  Maybe they are.  In fact, that vehicle is a nice car.  But, it is not an anomaly.  It is not a vehicle that gets a lot of attention, as it is a common sighting.

Today, I was on the bus going to the club and I glance out my window and see a “nice” car.  I begin to look closer and notice it is a circa 1995 red Eclipse. A car (no offense to anyone!) that would be judged upon in the Princeton-West Windsor area.  However, here in Mendoza, that car is NICE.  That car would have people turning their heads and say “SHAZAAM,” or “bbuuuuuuuuueeeno.”

Here, to buy a vehicle that is imported from another country, such as the US or Europe, the people must pay ridiculous amount of taxes that makes the Fords, Chevys, Mercedes-Benz, and BMWs more expensive to buy here than they would be in the US (and that is with the conversion of pesos to dollars).  So, in reality, when someone has an imported car, it is in fact being driven by someone who has a lot of money.  As I might have mentioned to some previously, I have yet to see a Volvo driven by an Argentinean.  That day will be the day I see someone SUPER wealthy.

K bye.
